Preparing For The Many Options In Catering Careers By Jonathan Walker
Once you have graduated from College, it will be time for you to thoroughly decide what route you want your Career to take. Whilst you are earning your qualifications though, you will need to think about the patch that you want to venture down in the real world. The main reasoning behind this is that different skills are required. If you have something in mind while your in College, follow what is needed for that. By this, enrol on the module that is more relevant should you have a choice.
If you haven’t got a specific Careers path in mind whilst your in College, don’t panic, instead concentrate on learning the basics. The basics that you will learn and need to develop is your technical skills. These skills will form the basics of any Chef’s or Kitchen workers arsenal. Knife Skills, Cooking Methods, Timing and of course working under pressure is what you need to be able to do!
You will also gain experience of the various culinary skills during your time earning qualifications. In fairness, most Chefs have a good understanding of what makes a good dish to begin with, or at an early stage of their development. However you will learn a lot of culinary information whilst training. You will gain a much wider understanding on seasoning, flavour combinations and presentation.
At some point in your Career, you may wish to run your own business or establishment. With this in mind, you will understandably need an understanding of the business side of things. To run your own venture, it’s more than likely that you will need to present a business plan, or have the knowledge of how to make a profit. To gain a better understanding of this, you need to enrol on a business course. In an ideal world you should do this sooner rather than later.
You may also need to improve on your people skills in order to get the best out of your team, whether you’re a manager of an establishment or just need to take charge of the kitchen. There are plenty of courses, some which are very short will help you to achieve this.
So there you have it, you may not know which one of the many Careers you may wish to undertake, but you can learn the skills and knowledge to be a success for when you do.
